Now that you have purchased great quality furniture, we know you want to take great care to ensure it lasts for years to come. We encourage you to read and use these helpful tips to keep all your home furnishings in like-new condition.
Fabric Upholstery Care
Regular maintenance is very important to keeping your upholstery looking great. Seat and back cushions should be flipped and rotated, if possible, at least once a month. Cores with down in them should be fluffed at least once a week to keep the feathers from accumulating in one area. Regular vacuuming helps fabric last longer as well.
Most upholstered pieces have a cleaning code that is usually listed on the law label underneath the cushions or on the bottom of the piece. If you cannot find the code you can always contact your sales person to get the code. This code tells you the best way to clean your particular piece of upholstery. If you attempt to clean upholstery yourself, it is highly suggested that you test a small area to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric. We also recommend the Guardsman Protection Plan which covers most incidentals that occur in the home.
Fabric Cleaning Codes
DC - Dry Clean Only
S - Clean only with a dry cleaning solvent. Do not saturate. Do not use water. Some fabrics may require brushing to restore appearance. Cushion covers should not be removed and dry cleaned.

Leather is cowhide and, much like our own skin, has imperfections such as scars, color variations, etc… This is what makes leather beautiful and should be expected in your leather upholstery. These are not defects and will in no way affect the durability or construction of your piece. In fact these imperfections are a great way for you to know you have real leather.
Leather should be dusted often and vacuumed regularly. Do not place sharp objects on leather. Leather is a very durable product but can still be damaged. Keep your leather furniture out of direct sunlight and 2-3 feet away from any heat sources to prevent fading and cracking.
Do not use abrasives, harsh chemicals, saddle soap, leather cleaners that contain any oils, soaps/detergents, or common household cleaners on your leather. Only use recommended leather cleaners such as Guardsman Leather cleaner. Follow instructions on any leather cleaner you may use and always test the cleaner or conditioner on an obscure area before using.
Leather conditioners such as Guardsman Leather conditioner provide a barrier to stains and help extend the life of your leather. We also highly recommend the Guardsman Protection Plan which covers most accidents that can occur in the home.
Always use a slightly damp lint-free cloth to polish/dust wood furniture on a weekly basis. Keep wood furniture away from direct sunlight and vents to prevent moisture loss and fading. Use felt on accessories that you place on your furniture for decoration to prevent scratching. Use placemats and coasters under hot and cold items such as plates and glasses to prevent rings in the wood. Always wipe up food and liquid spills immediately. We suggest the use of McKay Table pads on dining tables to keep your tables safe during use in the home. We also suggest the Guardsman Protection Plan which covers most accidents that occur in the home.
The use of a rug pad under your rug is a great way to give your rug a much longer life. Also rotating the rug once a year will help prevent a traffic pattern from forming on part of the rug.
Vacuuming regularly is the best way to keep your rug clean. It’s recommended that the brush on the vacuum cleaner be turned off and the suction on the vacuum cleaner be set to the lowest level possible. Also avoid the edges of the rug to prevent any unnecessary fraying. (There are certain rugs that cannot be vacuumed so be sure to read your care instructions). It is highly recommended that you allow a professional to clean your rug if stains occur. We recommend the Guardsman Protection Plan on this which covers any cleaning bills due to accidental spills.
Preventative care is the best way of maintaining a great night’s sleep on your mattress. Guardsman Mattress Pads protect your mattress and also provide a protection plan that covers your mattress if stains occur. Vacuuming is the best way to attempt to clean a mattress yourself. Do not use any type of dry cleaning fluid as it can damage the foam and other materials in your mattress.
We do suggest rotating the mattress occasionally to help prevent body impressions from forming on the mattress. Having proper support under your mattress will help prevent impressions as well and is also required by most bedding manufacturers for warranty purposes. (Body impressions are normal and are not considered a defect by most manufacturers if they are less than 2”).
