Customizing a new sofa can seem overwhelming; yet, if you follow a few steps it will be easier than you may think. Always consider how the seating will be used and which room it will be placed.

First step: Choose a frame size and style you like

Step 2: Research

Once you have a frame and style in mind you’ll want to research which brands offer complete customization and those which only allow fabric or leather options.  It’s up to you in how you customize your seating. You may decide to only customize the fabric and use the showroom models as a guide for the styling, but many choose to accent their sofas with select woods, trims and custom cushions. Step 3: Custom Sofa, Choose your legs and base

Each maker will vary but many will allow you to choose from a straight rail base, Serpentine rail, dressmaker , kick pleat skirt, tapered square, turned leg, swivel leg, round leg, upholstered or exposed. Your sales associate can help define each of these and assist you in making the right choice.

Step 4: Choose your arm

As with the base, there are several arm choices and most offer an English arm, Rolled arm, Track arm, straight cushion arm, armless, slope arm, sock arm, pleated arm or nailed arm.

Step 5: Choose your back

Comfort is a must in choosing your back and cushion style, therefore consider how you like to sit on your sofa, this will help you in making a better choice. There are high backs, low backs, square box backs, knife backs, box border backs,

Step 6: Select your edge for your custom sofa

Back and seat edging choices are more for look than comfort, these may include: self-welt seats and backs or a saddle-stitched weltless edge.

Step 7: Choose seat and back cushions

Most makers will offer a standard filled seat and back cushion, but some will also offer a more expensive spring down fill and eight-way hand tied construction in the main sofa frame.

Step 8: Choose your skirt

If the sofa style you choose has a skirt? You may have the options of a pleated skirt, box pleat skirt, shirred corner skirt, soft tracked shirred skirt or ruffle skirt, again the style you skirt you choose will determine your final look.

Step 9: Choose your finish on your custom sofa

Most legs if exposed allow you to customize them in a dark, medium or lighter finish. This decision is based on what fabric or leather you have chosen.These steps may seem overwhelming as you read though each one, but remember your sales associate is well versed in helping you make the correct choice to insure your custom sofa is perfect and enjoyed for many years to come.
